APPLICATION INFORMATION
Most integratedcircuits, bothHNMOS and bipolar,
are very sensitive to positiveand negativeovervol-
tageson the supplyandat the inputs.
These transients occur in large numbers and with
differentmagnitudesintheautomotiveenvironment,
making adequateprotectionfordevicesai-med at it
indispensible.
Overvoltageson the supply line are faced through
highvoltageintegrationtechnologiesor throughex-
ternalprotection(transil, varistor).
Signal inputs are generally protected using clamp
diodesto thesupplyand ground,and a currentlimi-
terresistor.However, such solutionsdo notalways
completely satisfy the protection specifications in
termsof interventionspeed,negativeclampingand
current leakage high enough to changeanalog si-
gnals.
The L9700 device combines a high intervention
speed with a high precision positive and negative
clamp anda lowcurrentleakageprovidingtheopti-
mal solution to the problems of the automotiveen-
vironment.
The high interventionspeed,due to the pre-biasof
the limiter stage and internal feedback, limits the
voltageovershootand avoidtheuseof externalca-
pacitorsforthe limitation of thetransientrisetimes.
Figure 3 illustratesa typical automotiveapplication
scheme. The resistor R

thecharacteristicsofthetransientstobe eliminated.
