isaversatilecommunicationsprocessorthatinte-
gratesononechip,ahigh-performancePowerPC(PC603e)RISCmicroprocessor,a
highlyflexiblesystemintegrationunit,andmanycommunicationsperipheralcontrol-
lersthatcanbeusedinavarietyofapplications,particularlyincommunicationsand
networkingsystems.
ThecoreisanembeddedvariantofthePC603emicroprocessor,specificallyreferred
tolaterinthisdocumentastheEC603e,with16Kbytesofinstructioncacheand16
Kbytesofdatacacheandnofloating-pointunit(FPU).Thesysteminterfaceunit(SIU)
consistsofaflexiblememorycontrollerthatinterfacestoalmostanyuser-defined
memorysystem,a60x-to-PCIbusbridge(availableinfuturerevisions)andmany
otherperipherals,makingthisdeviceacompletesystemonachip.
Thecommunicationsprocessormodule(CPM)includesalltheperipheralsfoundin
thePC860,withtheadditionofthreehigh-performancecommunicationchannelsthat
supportnewemergingprotocols(forexample,155-MbpsATMandFastEthernet).
Equippedwithdedicatedhardware,thePC8260canhandleupto256full-duplex,
time-division,multiplexedlogicalchannels.
