FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTIONS
Thisdevice wasdevelopedspecially forautomotive
applications to drive different loads like relais,
lamps,databusesoractuatorswith verylow current
consumption.
The L9824 contains eight identical channels each
with a separate DATA input/output and the power
output. In each channel the memory function, the
outputshort circuit functionand the diagnosticfun-
ction is realized.
The common part determines the functionmodes
throughENABLE and TRANSFER inputswhereas
thereferencepartbiasesallcurrentsourcesandge-
nerates the threshold voltages and the stabilized
supplyvoltagefor the wholeCMOS-logic.
A special thermal protection, ESD-protected in-
puts/DATApins anda particular outputshort circuit
characteristicprevent a damageor the destruction
of the device.
Referring to the block diagram it can be seen that
each channel works independentand contains all
necessary functions described in the following
points.

TRANSFER FROM DATA INPUT TO POWER
OUTPUT.
The DATA pins are used bidirectionally. The main
path is the non inverting transfer of a digitalsignal
fromtheDATApintothepoweroutput(TRANSFER
MODE). The data pass the input latch that works
alsoasamemoryin theHOLDMODE. Theyremain
stored until the TRANSFER MODE is selected to
write in newdata.
This meansthatinallothermodesthememorycon-
tentwill not be changedexcept the outputshortcir-
cuitprotectionwas activemore than thechecktime
of 42.5ms.In thiscasein allmodesthestorageflip-
flop will be set to hold the output forprotectioninto
the Off-state.Byactivating the READ MODE inthis
positionit is possible to detectshort-circuit load.
To switch on theoutputagain,the externalcontrol
processorhas toselecttheTRANSFERMODEand
to changetheinputsignalatthecorrespondingdata
terminaltoHIGHtoset thestorageflip-flopandthen
to write in LOW. An additionalreading of thischan-
nel output (selecting the READ MODE after the
mentionedchecktime)showswhethertheshort-cir-
cuit is still present.
