lost packets, and discontinuities; it also can spontaneously detect and
handle splice points.
The built-in oversampling audio clock frequency generator is another
cost-saving feature that lets you use cheaper audio DACs in your system.
The high speed AUX output port is a special 8-bit parallel port that out-
puts only user-selected transport packets. One of the many uses of this
port is to record a program on an external storage device.
The direct DRAM interface to the cache mechanism allows a low-cost
host processor to use the transport DRAM as system memory. The
L64007’s memory can be shared by the L64002 MPEG-2 Audio/Video
Decoder. In this mode, some of the data required by the L64002 is stored
in the L64007’s DRAM and, when required, transferred to the L64002.
This extended channel mode lets users take advantage of the DRAM of
the transport device for the memory requirements of graphics and video
applications. This is especially useful for PAL applications.
The on-chip audio clock generator provides a 256 to 384 oversampling
audio clock to drive the L64002 and external stereo audio D/A convert-
ers. The Program Clock Reference (PCR) and Voltage Control Oscillator
(VCxO) control logic provide a complete program clock recovery solution.
The L64007’s principle of operation is straightforward:

A stream of data packed in transport layer format (188 bytes per
packet; see Figure 1.1) enters the L64007 through its channel
decoder interface. The L64007 detects the sync byte, which is the
rst byte of very transport packet header. Once in sync, byte-aligned
data is posted to the next stage of processing.

The L64007 parses the incoming data using its Packet ID (PID) Pro-
cessor. Upon user programming, the L64007 extracts the user-
selected program, audio, and video Packetized Elementary Stream
(PES) data, Program-Specic Information (PSI), Service Information
(SI), and Private Data.

The selected audio and video PES layer encoded data stream is out-
put through the L64007’s audio/video interface port.
4.
The PSI, SI, and Private Data can be stored in the external DRAM
buffer, or transferred directly to the host processor port.
